Alternative fuel vehicle

Program Overview

As society continues to evaluate future alternative fuel vehicles, CEM’s experience in power systems have been applied to help guide ongoing discussions, and development much needed technologies.  Many municipalities are actively evaluating alternative fuel options for both transportation and fleet vehicles.  To assist, CEM is capable of providing knowledge regarding the technologies under consideration, power system modeling capabilities for comparison of system options, and engineer design and testing skills assisting in prototype development to assist in technology assessment or to bring forward new technologies needed for fuel advancement in the marketplace.  Whether it is mass transit or personal transportation, the methods and communications of transportation are rapidly changing within communities, requiring a group like CEM with in-depth knowledge of emerging technology options and the capability of developing innovative new solutions to bring to market.

CEM Approach

CEM’s history in power system design and analysis, along with prototype development, provide an ideal foundation for this program.  CEM leverages enterprise software tools to conduct system design, analysis and validation.  CEM’s analysis tools allow consideration of an array of parameters effecting system performance. These tools also allow for a seamless transition into prototype development and testing.  To date, CEM has participated in multiple fleet vehicle assessments in partnership with city transportation providers, environmental agencies, government officials, and commercial companies.  In addition, the Center has participated in technology development projects funded from the DOD, DOT, and ARPA-E.

UPS Delivery Van

Fuel Cell Hybrid Delivery Van

With a 150-mile range per fueling, this project will also retrofit 15 UPS delivery vans with fuel cell hybrid power trains and test these vehicles at distribution facilities.
